To celebrate Hamble-le Rice’s early aviation history (Avro, Fairey and Armstrong Whitworth all built aircraft here) The local council and developers have collaborated to install a 7-metre high sculpture designed by artist Ray Smith. The vertical burst  includes representations of  Avro 504, Fairey and Armstrong Whitworth biplanes, together with a Supermarine floatplane, built at nearby Southampton used to capture the Schneider Trophy in 1931.
